Robert Smith grew up in Crawley, a suburb of London that’s quite noisy due to its location beneath the flight path to Gatwick Airport.

Smith and Mary Poole have been inseparable since they first met in drama class at age 14. They were married August 13, 1988, at a Benedictine Monastery in Sussex. “Lovesong” (from Disintegration) was written as a wedding present to her. Mary can be seen in the video for “Just Like Heaven.”

In September 1979, the Cure was dropped from a tour with Generation X after Lol Tolhurst accidentally walked in on Billy Idol having sex with a groupie.

Bizarre things tend to happen at Cure shows. At a gig in Bournemouth on February 28, 1979, an angry woman pulled off her boyfriend’s ear. On July 27, 1979, a fan named Jon Moreland, distraught after being dumped by his girlfriend, jumped onstage during a show in Los Angeles and proceeded to stab himself repeatedly. He survived.

In December 1979, Robert Smith, Lol Tolhurst and an ex-postman named Frank Bell released a one-off single called “I’m a Cult Hero” under the name the Cult Heroes. They played just one gig: March 23, 1980, at the Marquee in London.

The Cure is quite good at releasing compilations of previously issued material. Boys Don’t Cry was first released in North America in February 1980 but three years later in the UK. Japanese Whispers was a collection of singles released between November 1982 and November 1983. In 1986, the Cure issued Staring at the Sea/Standing on a Beach (see footnote above). A 12-CD boxed set was issued on the Alex label in 1991. Finally, Galore (October 1997) featured all the singles from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me through Wild Mood Swings, i.e., 1987–97.

In January 1981, the Cure provided the music for a short film called Carnage Visors, and then used it as entrance music for Cure concerts. The track first appeared on the cassette version of Faith.

Smith plays guitar on the Hyena album by Siouxsie and the Banshees, including “Dear Prudence.” Smith and Steve Severin collaborated on a project called The Glove in 1983.

“The Love Cats” was originally based on a fantasy involving the deliberate drowning of some kittens.

The Hair first appeared sometime in 1982, around the release of Pornography. After a couple of years with long and swoopy hair (peaking with an incredible spiderweb do in about 1984 that was imitated by fans around the world), Smith shocked fans by getting a military-style haircut in late 1986. Reaction was intense, recalling the day when Elvis’s locks were shorn on his induction in the army. The Hair reappeared within a year, but Smith went short again in 1992.

Smith has long been afraid of flying. When the band embarked on their 1989 tour of North America, he insisted on crossing the Atlantic on the QE2.

Terribly disappointed by English radio (too much pop, not enough good indie music), Smith invested substantial amounts of money in setting up a London station called XFM. After finally
